Mistreatment means denying seniors their rights, causing harm, or taking advantage of them because of their age. This can include physical, emotional, or verbal abuse; neglect of basic needs; financial fraud; or manipulation by those in a position of trust. It can happen anywhere, by anyone, even someone close to the senior or the senior themselves.
Report Mistreatment Team includes:
- Senior Advocates are often the first to respond when mistreatment is reported. Their role is essential because they offer immediate emotional support, take time to understand the situation, and help the senior or loved one feel heard. Their calm and compassionate approach lays the foundation for everything that follows.
- Certified & Investigative Ombudsmen bring the training and authority to investigate mistreatment in long-term care settings. Their role is vital because they ensure each complaint is handled thoroughly and that seniors’ rights are protected throughout the process. They also work with facilities and agencies to push for proper resolution.
Every report of mistreatment is handled by a specialized team made up of Advocates and Ombudsmen. This team approach means every report receives both the heart and the skill it deserves—compassion from the start, and follow-through to the end.
What to report
We urge seniors, family members, caregivers, and concerned individuals to report any suspected mistreatment—no matter who is responsible. Mistreatment can come from anyone, even someone close to the senior, so if something feels wrong, speak up. Your report could protect a senior's quality of life.
- Report Neglect: Neglect happens when seniors lack necessary care, support, or attention, causing physical or emotional harm. This includes neglect in healthcare facilities, assisted living settings, or within families.
- Report Abuse: Abuse against seniors takes various forms, such as physical, emotional, sexual, or financial abuse. It involves intentional harm or exploitation by caregivers, family members, or other trusted individuals.
- Report Fraud: Fraudsters often target seniors to exploit their trust or financial resources. Fraud includes scams, identity theft, financial exploitation, or deceptive practices aimed at defrauding older adults of their savings or assets.
